Economical Tips for Celebrating Children’s Birthdays
Usually, it’s not just children who are excited about their birthday parties. Mama is no less busy making various preparations, so that her child’s birthday party goes lively.
It doesn’t have to be luxurious, but it has to be impressive for invited guests, and of course, your little one’s birthday. Mom’s time is often spent browsing various fun party ideas, but they are still pocket friendly, and don’t interfere with her routine monthly expenses or savings/investments.
So, if your budget is limited, there are several things that you can actually get around, without having to sacrifice the excitement of your child’s birthday party.
Preparation
Start the ‘hunt’ and survey party supplies well in advance. That way, you still have time to peek at the shops that provide the best prices. You will also avoid buying forgotten knick-knacks at expensive prices just before the event.
“A few months before the event, I was busy wandering from one online shop to another looking for supplies that fit the party theme, at the cheapest prices,” said Helen Holden, owner of the Counting Candles blog.
Instagram can be used as a reference, because many offer unique products there, from party supplies to custom souvenirs at competitive prices. Some hashtags that you can use in the Instagram search column, for example #party supplies, #party supplies, #balloon supplier, #child’s birthday party.
Party Hours
When is the best time to invite little guests? Danielle Walker, author of the book Against All Grain: Celebration, suggests holding a party from 14.00 to 17.00.
After lunch and before dinner are the best times to party, when guests don’t need a full meal. That way, you can save money on a large meal menu, because it only serves finger food or snacks, such as various cakes, chips, market snacks, etc.
Invitation
In a survey conducted by Parents magazine, of 1,500 parents in the United States, 73% still sent paper invitations to their children’s birthday parties. Usually, birthday invitations are in the form of cards.
But, instead of spending money on printing paper invitations, try digital invitations, which you can send via e-mail, chat application, or social media. Apart from being economical, it is also environmentally friendly.
Form a Party
If your child’s birthday is also close to a friend’s birthday, consider throwing a joint party. You and the child’s parents can share party costs and assignments.
But, make sure each child has their own birthday cake. Or, you can hold activities other than parties, which are no less exciting, as done by Erin Boyle, author of Simple Matters, “My husband and I celebrated our daughter’s first birthday with a picnic with friends and relatives.”
Birthday cake
This is an item that can drain your wallet. Get around this by making your own cake. Karen Tack, from Cake My Day!, suggests using ready-made cake mix that is sold on the market.
However, replace the buttermilk with water so that the cake becomes denser and not too sweet. Then, decorate the cake with homemade buttercream, by beating milk, unsalted butter, vanilla and sugar using a mixer.
Then, decorate the cake with sprinkles, marshmallows, or chocolate sticks. For inspiration and tutorials, you can get them from the internet.
Party Supplies
Stores specializing in party supplies often sell products that are also sold elsewhere, at higher prices.
For example, chocolates in packs of 5 are sold for IDR 50,000 at party supply stores. Meanwhile, for the same brand in wholesale supermarkets, the price can be below that.
You can also choose to shop at online stores. Indeed, prices are not always more economical when you shop online. But, at least, by shopping online, you can reduce the risk of impulsive shopping.
The temptation is certainly greater if there are various cute and adorable items in front of your eyes. Without realizing it, you are ‘hungry’ and buy things that you don’t actually need.
Performer
Mobilize your network to join in enlivening the party. For entertainment and entertainment, ask friends or relatives to help you, suggest Steve and Annette Economides, MoneySmartFamily.com channel performers.
